About Rissho Kosei-kai
  • Rissho: means establishing the teachings of the true Dharma (Lotus Sutra) in the world.
  • Ko of Kosei: signifies mutual exchange of thought among people seeking spiritual growth – that is, the principle of spiritual unity among all human beings
  • Sei: stands for perfection of the personality and the attainment of buddhahood
  • Kai: means association or society.
Our purpose is to learn and understand Shakyamuni Buddha’s realization of the Truth, to practice these teachings in our daily lives, and create a prosperous life, brighter society, and peaceful world. Rissho Kosei-kai was founded in 1938 by Nikkyo Niwano and Myoko Naganuma. They saw the need for a Buddhist practice that would combine traditional teaching with everyday application to help a modern and expanding world find peace, harmony, and happiness. Our study and practices are based on the teachings of Ekayana (One Vehicle) Buddhism. This combination of core Buddhist teachings and the wisdom found in the Threefold Lotus Sutra, guides the members in their daily lives, helping them develop spiritual maturity and produces a very fulfilling life.

Rissho Kosei-Kai has 1.8 million members and 250 centers worldwide.
